چکیده
Commentary The updated systematic review by Cahill and colleagues has several new findings that are useful for clinicians. First, cytisine, a low-cost plant-derived agent from Eastern Europe, had a modest increase in quit rates across 2 high-quality trials. A previous review found that earlier trials were of low quality (1), and publication bias is likely given that the drug had been studied in regions where there was a tradition of publishing only positive research (2).

Varenicline in the treatment of tobacco dependence
Varenicline, a partial agonist of alpha(4)beta(2) nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, is the most recently approved drug for smoking cessation. This paper reviews the outcomes of Phase 2 and Phase 3 clinical trials that assess the efficacy of varenicline in comparison to placebo and other smoking cessation pharmacotherapies, ie, sustained-release bupropion (bupropion SR) and nicotine transdermal...
متن کاملComparative Effectiveness of Smoking Cessation Medications: A National Prospective Cohort From Taiwan
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Relative effectiveness of smoking cessation medications-varenicline, bupropion and nicotine replacement therapy (NRT)-remains unclear among smokers in real-world settings. Evidence in females and smokers with light/moderate nicotine dependence is particularly insufficient. This study compared the effectiveness of varenicline, bupropion or NRT gum relative to NRT patch, ...

The study by Rose and Behm in this issue (1) is a remarkable first attempt to improve smoking cessation by selecting treatment for individual patients based on an initial test period. Smoking cessation treatments specify a quit date, usually 2 weeks after the initiation of treatment. Rose and Behm used this 2-week period to identify those patients who would likely respond to nicotine replacemen...
متن کاملThe neurobiological basis for partial agonist treatment of nicotine dependence.
Smoking cessation has major health benefits for men and women of all ages. However, most smokers are addicted to nicotine and fail repeatedly in their attempts to quit. Stimulation of nicotinic receptors in the brain, particularly alpha4beta2 receptors, releases dopamine in the meso-limbic area of the brain and is reinforcing. Nicotine abstinence reduces dopamine release, and this is associated...
متن کاملManipulation of cigarette craving with transcranial magnetic stimulation.
The health risks and societal costs of cigarette smoking are well documented, but the prevalence of smoking among American adults remains high at approximately 20%. Most smokers endorse a desire to quit, but very few (only about 4–7%) will actually do so in a given year without treatment. Current commonly used treatments for tobacco dependence include nicotine replacement therapy (e.g., patch, ...
